Symptoms of Marijuana Toxicity in Dogs
Colorado is known for being one of the few states where recreational marijuana use is legal. While there are many benefits of CBD oil for dogs, it still is important to realize that you do need to keep your dog out of your stash. Marijuana Toxicity is quite common in dogs. Many owners are reluctant to be forthcoming to the veterinary team about their marijuana usage-despite the fact that veterinarians are not required by law to report any drug usage by a pet owner to the authorities.
It is important to remember that your veterinary team is more concerned about saving your dog’s life than what you choose to do in your spare time.
With this said, the following are symptoms of marijuana toxicity in dogs. If you believe your pet has gotten into your cannabis, contact your veterinarian right away.
- Change in mentation (Note: some dogs may act abnormally aggressive while under the influence of marijuana)
- Inability to Walk
- Hypersalivation (excessive drooling)
- Dilated Pupils
- Marked sedation
- Vomiting and nausea
- Ataxia (stumbling gait)
Depending on how recently you believe your dog has ingested marijuana, your veterinarian may recommend inducing emesis (vomiting) to get the marijuana out of their system. They may also recommend using activated charcoal which helps rid the body of unwanted substances. If your dog has ingested chocolate or other substances in addition to the marijuana, additional treatments may be necessary. Your veterinarian may also recommend calling Pet Poison Control for guidance on how to treat your pet.
